Thoughts on this? At the moment comments are disabled, however thay can be enabled and allow readers to post comments on the website. I'm kind of in two minds about it. On the one hand it could open the site up even more and encourage people to discuss the stories, but at the same time it could attract spammers and the like.
Another idea would be to have a link to the forums at the end of each story.
I thought I would get the opinions of our (tiny) community before I go and make any changes.

The comment system should never be enabled, unless you have a system in place whereby we can moderate each and every comment and, as the case may be, delete it. If such a system is not supported by the host site, then the second option would be to create a separate forum, exclusively for the readers.
I think this discussion forum should be closed to the public; it makes the site look a tad unprofessional and unpolished. Can you imagine such industry leaders as the New Yorker or the Vanity Fair saying to the readers, "Hey, this is our editing forum! Come and see how the articles are written!"?
This discussion community should be open only to the contributors, and for the general public, another forum should be prepared.
Am I sounding unreasonable?

I'll take that as a big "No" from mike.
The forum will stay open to the public. Part of the reason for keeping it open is to attract new members, particularly translators. I get the feeling that readers of the site probably wouldn't be all that interested in the story section anyway; they presumably can't speak much Japanese, if they could, they would be translating stories themselves.
Maybe one day we will have separate boards for readers and translators, but it won't be any time soon.
At the end of the day, this site is still very new and quite unique. We're still not 100% sure which direction the site and the forum will go. For the time being we just need to focus on building up a large pool of members, both readers and translators.

I apologize if I sounded too caustic up there. I didn't mean to put a damper on "our" ambitious project. After all, to stand out from the crowd, you need to be different!
So, by all means! You've brought me around!
P.S. Have you added the edits I sent to you to the story?

No need to apologize, I understand completely the points you are making.
Also, I just made the edits you sent me. Thanks.

I agree with Mike that we should not allow comments on the stories unless we are prepared to vet each one first. That will take a lot of time, and hopefully if the site grows even more time in the future. And I agree with Hamish that these forums are necessary, because I believe the forums are the key objective of the whole project... to get people involved in translation, discussing, polishing works together. The final stories are a reward for those involved, but the process is the goal.

Alright, I think I'll leave the comments disabled. We would have to moderate them and that would definitely take up too much time.
