That night, the stars looked about to shower.
In a stand of pines,
I a squatter.
Oh, a steam train!
Chuffing in the starlight---
Where you headed tonight?
The wind has sunk,
The earth is dank.
All quiet, near and far,
The blades of the bamboo grass.

星の降るよな夜(よる)でした
松の林のその中に、
僕は蹲(しゃが)んでおりました。
星の明りに照らされて
折(おり)しも通るあの汽車は、
今夜何処(どこ)までゆくのやら。
松には今夜風もなく
土はジットリ湿ってる。
遠く近くの笹の葉も
しずもりかえっているばかり。
星の降るよな夜でした、
松の林のその中に
僕は蹲んでおりました。
