God of Forests Yumeno Kyusaku The god of forests grew trees and bamboo as a place for travelers to the desert, and they grew green and thick. In the middle there gushed a clear spring from which the thirsty travelers would drink. Many people came and built houses under the trees, fences around the forest and charged money to those who would come to rest. They charged even more for those who drank from the spring. The god of forests detested these horrid and greedy people, so he let the spring dry up and the trees whither Those who would charge the travelers found themselves in dire straits. "What a spiteful god," they cursed the god of forests And so the god of forests spoke. "I did not create this forest for you. I put it here for the travelers." www.aozora.gr.jp/cards/000096/files/46728_27704.html~~~ I literally cannot tell if this is and allegory for something, or just a simple tale for really little kids.

Minor typo, and also I think that you should continue the god causing these things to happen. So maybe something like, "he caused a clear spring to well up and allowed thirsty travelers to drink from it." There's probably a better way of incorporating the 飲ましてやりました, but I can't think of one. Thees and thous and whatnot are usually only for human-to-god speech, I'm pretty sure. The reference to deserts makes me wonder if this might be based on a fable of Chinese origin. Deserts definitely seem to imply, if not China, at least a foreign location in my experience. All in all, a nice little piece. I think I've taken a look at this guy's work before, but I didn't find anything that interested me in particular. I might have a good header image for the story, too. I took it while I was hiking the Nakasendo in Nagano Pref.

Thanks!
Also thanks for the image; I will definitely use it.
This is a super short piece so I'm going to translate a couple more super short stories and post them all together.
I you want to submit a flash fiction translation I will post it along with mine.
