The following guidelines apply to the Short Stories Japan (SSJ) site. To avoid possible legal issues, please read and respect them. If you have any questions, please ask.
Authors (rights holders)
Translators
Site operations
Authors (rights holders)
- Translation will be accurate and in appropriate English. Nothing will be added except as needed to clarify a meaning to readers unfamiliar with Japan. Nothing will be omitted.
- Author will retain all rights to the Japanese.
- Author grants Translator and SSJ non-exclusive rights to translate and publish in online form, and in ezine form, for considerations as agreed on in advance.
- Author may request removal of any work from the site and ezine at any time, and that work will be removed within 30 days.
- Translator retains rights to the translation.
- The Author’s name (or indicated pseudonym) will always be shown with the work. If the Author requests, additional information (website, address, etc.) will also be shown where possible.
- SSJ offers Authors a vehicle to display their works in English, but does not assume any responsibility for the content posted. Any suits based on content are the responsibility of the Author, except where such content has been created by the Translator and is not present in the source work.
Translators
- Translation should be accurate and in appropriate English. Nothing should be added except as needed to clarify a meaning to readers unfamiliar with Japan. Nothing should be omitted. Notes explaining translation issues are welcome.
- Author will retain all rights to the Japanese.
- Translator grants SSJ non-exclusive right to publish in online form, and in ezine form, for considerations as agreed on in advance.
- Translator may request removal of any work from the site and ezine at any time, and the work will be removed within 30 days.
- Translator retains rights to the translation.
- The Translator’s name (or indicated pseudonym) will always be shown with the work. If the Translator requests, additional information (website, address, etc.) will also be shown where possible.
- SSJ offers Translators a vehicle to display their works in English, but does not assume any responsibility for the content posted. Any suits based on content are the responsibility of the Author (where such content is present in the source work), or the Translator (where such content has been created by the Translator and is not present in the source work).
- Translations will be edited, and the Translator will work with SSJ to improve the translation. All edits are suggestions only, and may be accepted or rejected by the Translator.
- SSJ may reject any work it feels is inappropriate for any reason, or remove any work from the site and/or the ezine at any time.
- Non-exclusive rights means that the Translator is free to publish or re-use that translation, but only with the advance permission of the Author. If a Translator wishes to talk to an Author about other uses SSJ can provide introductions.
- Any story may be re-translated, but unless it is a very different interpretation SSJ will probably not publish it. In any case, a retranslation will also require permission from the Author of the work.
- It is legal to translate anything you like. It is illegal to publish a translation, including to a website, without the permission of the rights holder. For that reason, unless we can verify that translation and publication rights for the work have been obtained, SSJ will not publish it.
- Translators must provide us with legal name and contact information, but SSJ will not release any of that information in any way without your explicit advance permission. Once you register, you can adjust your profile to hide confidential information, and Translators may use handles (pseudonyms) if they wish.
Site operations
- Comments and suggestions on translations are welcome. Translators are urged to consider them, discuss them with contributors, and incorporate them as appropriate.
- Profanity, personal attacks, and other anti-social activity will result in one warning, and if repeated will result in the offending party being banned, and all translations by that person (if any) being removed from the site permanently.
- Links to the site or individual translations on the site are welcome. However, no work from the site may be posted elsewhere without explicit advance permission of both the Author and the Translator.
- There are no qualifications for becoming a contributing Translator or editor, but all Translators and editors are subject to peer comments and criticism. This site is not for learning or teaching English, although we have no objection to works from the site being used for that purpose.
