So I have been lurking around this site : syosetu.com/ for a little while now, and I have been quite impressed. Up until now I had been just using google to try and find people's works, but this site is an odd mix between writing and social media. Kind of like the Japanese version of Wattpad. Each author has a page where they post their works, and if you register an account yourself, you can contact them through the site's personal messaging system. You can't just translate things from the site as you please, though. Unlike the Aozora Bunko, the authors there are very much alive. If you find something you would like to translate, simply contact the author asking for permission. Do keep in mind that they have every right to decline your offer. Having said that, I have yet to have an author decline an offer from me (although a couple are still undecided). And even if you are not looking for something to translate, there is a massive body of work there, from opinion pieces to poems to full-length novels in every genre imaginable. Well worth a look-see, if you ask me.

Interesting that all the top ranked pieces are fantasy (except one romance). I may poke around a bit. Thanks for the tip.

I noticed that too. What I also found was that a lot of Japanese fantasy actually mimics western, tolkienesque fantasy in setting and characters, but seems to be a whole lot more light hearted than western fantasy stories. It might have something to do with the popularity of the Lord of the Rings and Hobbit movies.
There are also a lot of good opinion pieces and essays, but you do have to sit through a bit of crap to find them.
