An interesting tool I stumbled upon. Essentially it is the www lite text gloss from Monash university in a downloadable package, meaning of course that it can be used offline. Screen shots & download page : jglossator.sourceforge.net/#downloadI find it can sometimes come in handy for kanji compounds that other dictionaries refuse to read. It can also handle whole sentences as a time; it simply spits out a list if definitions of each word in the sentence (and their readings). Unlike the Monash page, this program provides example sentences for each word, which is also a plus.

Can you read classical Japanese, like The Tale of Genji?

I haven't tried anything like that yet so I can't say for sure. It seems pretty robust, but classical Japanese may be a stretch.
